Wireless Vogue

The number of mobile connections increased by 25.9 percent to 13.9 million in 2009 from the year before, while fixed telephone lines fell by 0.5 percent to 3.4 million, the Central Bank said in its annual report.

This meant there was an overall growth of 19.6 percent to 17.4 million phone connections in 2009 when compared to that of 2008. Read more »

Microsoft unveils Kin – its latest smartphone

Microsoft hopes to take on the growing importance of bitter rivals Apple and Google in the mobile phone market with a new range of its own mobile devices that focus on social networking.

Its new “Kin” range of mobile phones have slide-out qwerty keyboards – with the smaller device bearing an uncanny resemblance to the Palm Pre – and will be arriving in the US within weeks. Sony Ericsson Talks Tablets And Google

SonyEricsson President Bert Nordberg spent his first six months on the job slashing costs and paring projects to get the handset maker out of the red. The payoff came Friday: a first-quarter profit of $28.4 million that ended nearly two years of losses.

Nordberg, who previously headed Silicon Valley research and development efforts for Sony Ericsson parent Ericsson ( ERIC – news – people ), isn’t resting yet. In the coming months Sony Ericsson will launch smartphones with U.S. carriers, introduce a handset based on Microsoft’s ( MSFT – news – people ) new Windows Phone 7 software and tie its phones to parent company Sony’s TVs and computers, Nordberg told Forbes during a meeting in New York. Broadband operator 3 has launched a new in-car broadband service, meaning that passengers can connect to devices like the iPad and laptops while on the road.

Sky Player trial offered to digital TV subscribers

Bundle provider Sky is offering its digital TV subscribers the chance to try out its online broadcast platform for free.

The company, which also offers broadband and home phone deals, has revealed that all subscribers to its TV deals can access the Sky Player service without charge up until the middle of June.

Consumers with TV packs will need to subscribe to the certain channels, such as Sky Movies 1 and 2, to gain access to them through the platform.

A minimum 2Mbps broadband connection is recommended for using the service, while PCs must have Windows XP, Windows 7 or Vista. Sky Player can also be accessed through Xbox 360.

Details of the new offer have emerged after Sky also confirmed the platform is being introduced on Humax’s latest range of high-definition Freeview set-top boxes.

The first system of its kind launched in the UK was released by the company in February.

HTC Legend

The Legend is the smaller of two new HTC smartphones that use the Android operating system, which as usual, comes with the company’s own Sense graphical interface (the other one is the Desire – review coming soon).

It resembles the excellent Hero smartphone HTC released last year, with similar dimensions and the same outward-pointing ‘chin’ at the bottom, but below the surface it’s quite different. Read more »

The Peugeot RCZ

Some people simply do not appreciate soaring but non-traditional works of architecture. “Bloody hell, it looks like a jumbo jet has crashed on the vineyard,” was the impromptu verdict from one critic as we rounded a corner and the Marqués de Riscal hotel exploded into view, sprawled across a hillside in the rural heart of the Rioja Alavesa region of northern Spain.

Had he been within earshot, its creator, Frank Gehry, might have been upset. Not to worry, Frank – this critic was a specialist in cars, not architecture. And the cars we found lined up under the iridescent, swirling, titanium curves of the hotel eaves were in themselves a great stylistic advance for their maker, Peugeot. Read more »
